Vishti karana: meaning, sequence and timing

Vishti is a repeating karana, one of eleven names for the half-tithis in the lunar cycle. Each occurrence spans 6° of Moon–Sun separation. Its name returns several times each month. The clock times change with the Moon, so use your city's panchang rather than a fixed daily schedule.

Where does Vishti appear in the cycle?

Vishti returns every seven half-tithis through the repeating part of the cycle. The table lists every occurrence, counted from zero degrees of Moon–Sun separation.

Method: divide the wrapped Moon–Sun longitude difference by 6°. The first interval is Kimstughna; seven names then repeat until the last three intervals, Sakuna (also called Shakuni), Chatushpada and Naga. Each end boundary belongs to the following karana.

How do I find Vishti today?

Open the panchang for your city and chosen date. The karana row shows the name at sunrise and the next changes. A karana is half a lunar day, not necessarily twelve clock hours.

What does the karana tell me about an activity?

A traditional timing reading considers the karana alongside the tithi, weekday and the purpose of the activity. This page supplies the calendar calculation, not a blanket good-or-bad verdict. Keep practical deadlines and medical advice ahead of a symbolic timing preference.

Questions about Vishti

Does Vishti repeat?

Yes. It appears 8 times in the repeating sequence of one lunar cycle.

Is a karana the same as a tithi?

No. A tithi spans 12° of lunar elongation; a karana spans 6°. Two karanas fit inside each tithi.

Does a birth karana predict a person’s life?

A calendar label cannot establish a personality or a future event. These intervals are one part of a traditional reading, not a diagnosis or a promise.

The tables use the lunar-angle, weekday or ninefold-division definitions described above. Astronomy Engine supplies the positions used by our calculators. Interpretations are cultural context, not guaranteed outcomes.

How we calculate

Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?

No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.

How are these results calculated?

Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
