Nakshatra calculator: your birth star and pada

Your birth nakshatra (janma nakshatra) is the sidereal lunar mansion that held the Moon at birth. This calculator uses the Lahiri ayanamsa to find the nakshatra, its pada (quarter), its Vimshottari lord and deity. If the birth time is unknown it lists every nakshatra the Moon crossed that day, with the change times.

Which nakshatra held your Moon?

Lahiri sidereal zodiac, calculated on this device. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so an exact birth time helps; if you do not know it, the result lists every possibility for that day.

How is the birth nakshatra calculated?

Take the Moon's tropical longitude at birth, subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa (about 24.2° in 2026) to get the sidereal longitude, then divide by 13°20′. The whole number gives the nakshatra counted from Ashwini; the remainder, divided into four 3°20′ quarters, gives the pada. The nakshatra's Vimshottari lord follows the repeating sequence Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, which is why it also sets the first dasha of life. Deity names follow the settled table used in our mantra guides.

Results were cross-checked against a separate Swiss Ephemeris calculation for 24 dates. See all 27 nakshatras, the Vedic Moon sign calculator and the full Vedic birth chart.

How we calculate

Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?

No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.

How are these results calculated?

Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
