Compatibility
Zodiac sign compatibility: all 78 pairings explained
Zodiac sign compatibility compares two Sun signs by element, modality and how many signs apart they sit. It is a quick first read, nothing more. Synastry, which compares two whole birth charts, says far more, and the habits two people build together matter more than any chart. Pick your pair below or compare full charts.

How compatible are two signs? The 12 × 12 chart
Pick a row for one sign and a column for the other. Each pair has one guide, so Aries + Leo and Leo + Aries open the same page. Shading marks the traditional relationship between the signs (same element, compatible element, square or opposition); it is a reading convention, not a score.
- Same sign
- Same element (trine)
- Compatible element (sextile)
- Square (friction)
- Opposite signs
78 of 78 pair guides are published in this preview. For two actual people, the synastry calculator compares every planet in both charts.
People ask a version of the same question all the time: which zodiac signs work together? The short version is that two Sun signs give you a vocabulary for how two people might differ, not a verdict. This page explains the logic behind the 78 pairing pages on this site, what a full synastry reading adds, and where the whole idea runs out.
How Sun-sign compatibility works
There are twelve signs, so there are 78 possible pairs once you count each sign with itself. Every pairing page on this site reads a pair through three plain facts:
- Element. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Element is the broad temperament a sign is described with.
- Modality. Cardinal signs start things, fixed signs keep them going, mutable signs adapt. Two fixed signs, for example, can both be stubborn about the same plan.
- Distance. How many signs apart the two are, counted the short way round the zodiac. Each distance has a traditional aspect name, and that name carries a reputation.
Rulers come in as a fourth layer: two signs ruled by the same planet, such as Taurus and Libra (both Venus), often share tastes even when their elements differ.
The element and aspect logic in one table
| Signs apart | Aspect name | Element relationship | Usual reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Conjunction-like (same sign) | Same element, same modality | Instant recognition, and the same blind spots twice |
| 1 | Semi-sextile (neighbors) | Different elements | Little in common by default; each has what the other lacks |
| 2 | Sextile | Fire with air, earth with water | Friendly, cooperative, low drama |
| 3 | Square | Different elements, same modality | Friction and motivation; similar drive, different methods |
| 4 | Trine | Same element | Easy flow, sometimes too comfortable |
| 5 | Quincunx | Different elements and modalities | Awkward fit that asks both people to adjust |
| 6 | Opposition | Fire with air, earth with water | Attraction of opposites; balance or tug of war |
The "usual reading" column is tradition, not evidence. I find it useful as a set of questions. A trine pair can ask "are we avoiding anything because it's easy to?" A square pair can ask "are we fighting about goals or about methods?" That is about as far as a Sun-sign reading should be pushed.
Is there a zodiac compatibility chart for every pair?
Yes. The grid on this page links all 78 pairings, each in zodiac order (so it is always Aries and Leo, never Leo and Aries). Every pair page has the same parts: a small facts table, where the pair tends to flow, where friction shows up, concrete habits for planning, arguing, resting and deciding, and a note on the Vedic view. A few places to start:
- Aries and Leo, a fire trine
- Cancer and Scorpio, a water trine
- Aries and Libra, an opposition
- Taurus and Leo, a square between two fixed signs
- Leo and Leo, a same-sign pair
What is synastry?
Synastry is the technique of laying one birth chart over another and reading the contacts between them. Instead of two Sun signs, it uses everything: both Moons, Venus and Mars, Mercury for how two people talk, the rising signs, and the angles (aspects) that form between one person's planets and the other's. It needs birth dates, and ideally birth times and places, because the Moon changes sign every two or three days and the rising sign changes roughly every two hours.
That extra detail is why two people with "incompatible" Sun signs can have charts full of easy contacts, and the reverse. A Gemini and a Capricorn might share a Moon sign; an Aries pair might have Moons that square each other. If you want the real picture, compare your full charts. If you don't know your Moon or rising sign, the Moon sign calculator and rising sign calculator will find them.
Sun sign versus synastry at a glance
| Sun-sign compatibility | Synastry | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs | Two birthdays | Two birth dates, times and places |
| Looks at | Element, modality, sign distance | Every planet, angles and house overlays |
| Good for | A quick conversation starter | A detailed reflection on how two people meet |
| Limit | Ignores most of the chart | Still a symbolic reading, not a forecast |
Western and Vedic signs
This site works in two zodiacs. Tropical (Western) signs follow the seasons; sidereal (Vedic) signs follow the stars and currently sit about 24 degrees behind. Roughly four in five people born in a tropical sign have the Sun in the previous sign sidereally, so a tropical Leo is often a sidereal Cancer. Sign character is described in similar terms in both systems. Vedic compatibility usually starts from the Moon sign and the nakshatra rather than the Sun, and has its own matching methods that these pages don't try to replace. Check both versions of each chart before reading too much into a label.
Can you have more than one soulmate?
In astrological terms, nothing stops you. No chart contains a single destined match, and no sign is assigned one soulmate sign, though a lot of content online implies otherwise. People describe soulmate-level bonds with friends, siblings, mentors and partners, sometimes several across a life. If "soulmate" means a person you understand and choose again and again, that is built by two people, and astrology can only describe some of the terrain.
Honest limits
Sun-sign compatibility has never been shown to predict whether relationships last, and this site does not claim it does. Use these pages to name patterns and start conversations. Do not use them to rule anyone in or out, to judge a coworker before you've worked together, or to stay in a situation that is hurting you. The pages avoid scores, percentages and "best" and "worst" lists on purpose: a number would suggest a precision the method doesn't have.
The practical advice on each pair page (agree on a date, say the point in one sentence, take an hour apart before returning to an argument) is useful to almost anyone. The signs mostly suggest which piece of it a particular pair is likely to need first. Read your pair, then read the elements and modalities guides if you want the reasoning behind it.
Common questions
Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
There is no honest ranking. Same-element and complementary-element pairs tend to find each other easy, and squares and quincunxes tend to need more adjustment, but easy and good are different things. Whole charts and real behavior decide far more.
Do these pages only cover romance?
No. Every pairing page is written for any relationship, including friends, coworkers, siblings and parents with children.
Should I use my Sun sign or my Moon sign?
Start with whatever you know. Western sites usually lead with the Sun sign, Vedic astrology usually leads with the Moon sign, and a synastry chart uses both along with everything else.
Can a compatibility page tell me whether to stay in a relationship?
No. Astrology here is a reflection tool. Decisions about a relationship belong to the people in it, and anything involving safety deserves real-world help.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
