Jupiter / Brihaspati mantra: beej, Vedic text and meaning
Jupiter / Brihaspati worship uses both seed (bīja) mantras and Vedic verses. This page gives one of each, with their meanings and source notes. The Vedic verse has its own original setting; its later use in Navagraha worship does not make it a promise of health, wealth or a particular outcome.

What are mantras?
These are traditional seed (bīja) mantras used in Navagraha worship; exact textual origin varies by lineage. The seed formula below is not presented as a quotation from a specific source text.[34]
| Form | IAST text | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional beej | oṃ grāṃ grīṃ grauṃ saḥ gurave namaḥ | Drik Panchang modern mantra listing [15] |
| Vedic | bṛhaspate ati yad aryo arhād dyumad vibhāti kratumaj janeṣu / yad dīdayac chavasa ṛtaprajāta tad asmasu draviṇaṃ dhehi citram // | Ṛgveda 2.23.15 [49] |
The beej ends with an homage to Guru, here the planetary teacher Bṛhaspati; its seed syllables are not ordinary words with a single literal English translation.[15] The Vedic text above is checked against Ṛgveda 2.23.15.[49]
- Vedic meaning, editorial summary: A prayer to Bṛhaspati invoking splendor, discernment and valued gifts. The traditional request for riches is a prayer, not a financial forecast.
- Beej source note: the modern listings document use, not a single textual origin.
- The Vedic verse's original setting is distinct from its later use in planetary worship.
How to pronounce mantras?
Read the IAST slowly and use this respelling only as a first reading aid. A printed English guide cannot supply Vedic intonation.
| Form | Approximate guide |
|---|---|
| Traditional beej | ohm graam greem graum sah guravay namah |
| Vedic | Follow the IAST above with a qualified reciter; this page does not supply Vedic pitch accents. |
English respelling is approximate: a as in about, i as in sit, u as in put; aa as in father, ee as in see, oo as in food. Read ai like aisle and au like out; ay and oh are steady vowels without a strong English glide. The final m in a seed syllable is nasal resonance; h after a vowel is a light release. Pronounce consonant-plus-h with a breath release, not as English th. Dotted Sanskrit consonants and vocalic ṛ need a teacher's example. This guide does not encode Vedic pitch accents.
What do mantras do?
In this guide, chanting is a devotional choice, not a treatment or a technique for changing a planet. You can also choose silent reading of the meaning.
| Practice choice | Optional practice guidance |
|---|---|
| Weekday | Thursday; a suggested reminder, not a requirement |
| Hora | If you use planetary hours, let the engine compute the local Jupiter hora from sunrise and sunset; do not substitute a fixed clock hour. |
| Moon | No phase is prescribed by this page; a personal nakshatra choice requires a separate chart calculation |
| Repetitions | Read the meaning once; try three gentle repetitions for learning if appropriate to your tradition |
| Formal practice | Ask your teacher about initiation, accent and count; 108 is not a required or proven dose here |
Worked reflection
After a short session, study a subject with care. Write down the action rather than looking for evidence that the planet has rewarded the chant.
Common questions
Do I need to complete 108 repetitions?
No universal count applies here. This page suggests a short learning session, not a prescribed remedial course.
Can I use the pronunciation guide as an audio lesson?
No. English respelling is approximate and omits Vedic pitch accents; learn formal recitation with a qualified teacher.
Will this change an outcome?
This page describes devotional tradition. It does not promise a change in health, money, relationships or a chart.

Source review
The locator identifies the Vedic verse, not the origin of planetary worship. The text is shown in unaccented IAST for reading, not as an audio-ready recitation edition.[49] Modern Navagraha listings document the seed formula but do not establish a single originating text.[34] A Sanskrit/lineage audit is planned after launch; it does not block this content decision. Audio still needs a qualified reciter.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
