Tithi: meaning in astrology

A tithi is a lunar day. Each time the Moon moves another 12 degrees ahead of the Sun, a new tithi begins, so a lunar month has 30 of them. Because the Moon's speed varies, a tithi can last anywhere from about 19 to 26 hours and rarely lines up with a calendar day.

The tithi in effect at local sunrise usually names the day in the panchang. Many festivals and fasts, such as Ekadashi, the eleventh tithi, are set by tithi rather than by date.

How we calculate

Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?

No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.

How are these results calculated?

Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
