Personal year 1: the numerology year for beginnings
Personal year 1 is the first year of the nine-year cycle in modern Western numerology. You are in it when your birth month, birth day and the current calendar year add up and reduce to 1. It is traditionally read as a year for beginnings, which makes it a useful prompt for deciding what to start.

How to find out your numerology number?
There are several numerology numbers. Your life path uses your full birth date and stays the same for life. Your personal year changes every year, and it is the one most people use for timing.
The formula is: birth month + birth day + current calendar year, with every digit added and the total reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9.
Worked example, for an invented birthday of March 14, in 2027:
- Month: 3
- Day: 1 + 4
- Year: 2 + 0 + 2 + 7
- Total: 3 + 1 + 4 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1
So someone born on March 14 is in personal year 1 for 2027. The personal year calculator does this for any date.
Which convention this page uses
This site runs personal years on the calendar, from January 1 to December 31. Some practitioners run them from birthday to birthday instead. Under that method, the March 14 person above would stay in their 2026 number, personal year 9, until March 14, 2027, and only then move into year 1. Neither method is provably right. Pick one and stick with it so your notes stay comparable.
What personal year 1 is linked with
Modern numerology treats 1 as the number of starting, and personal year 1 follows. It comes straight after year 9, the year of finishing, so the usual reading is a cleared space and a fresh set of intentions. Writers describe it as a year to act on your own initiative, try new things and set the direction for the next nine years.
I find the "nine years" framing a bit heavy. A more practical version: what one or two things would you like to have started by December?
Start, continue, close
| Prompt for a personal year 1 | |
|---|---|
| Start | A project, habit or course you have been postponing |
| Start | A first version of something, even rough |
| Continue | Anything from the past year that still feels alive |
| Close | Leftover obligations you agreed to out of habit |
Using year 1 as a timing prompt
If you like to plan around dates, choose one start date in the first quarter and pin it to a vision board so it stays visible. Then write a short note each month in a manifestation journal about what you began and what you are still circling. Practical deadlines, budgets and other people's schedules matter more than the number. The number only gives you the question.
People whose life path is also 1 sometimes find this year especially familiar. The life path 1 page covers that theme.
Common questions
Do I have to start something big in a personal year 1?
No. The year is read as a good time for beginnings, but a small start counts, and practical timing should come first. Numerology offers the prompt, not the deadline.
What if I started something important in a different personal year?
People start things in every year of the cycle. The personal year is a lens for reflection, and it cannot make a start succeed or fail.
When does a personal year 1 begin?
On this site, on January 1 of the calendar year. Some numerologists start it on your birthday instead, so your year might change a few months later under their method.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
