Nakshatra
Bharani nakshatra: Yama, Venus and the ugra class
Bharani (Bharaṇī) is the second nakshatra, running from 13°20' to 26°40' of sidereal Aries. Yama, the god who rules over the dead and keeps account of deeds, is its deity, and Venus is its Vimshottari lord. The symbol most lists give is the yoni, and classical muhurta places it among the ugra, or fierce, nakshatras.

Bharani is the nakshatra people tend to look up after someone tells them it is "heavy." It does carry heavy imagery. It also carries a planet of pleasure and a symbol of birth, and that mix is what makes it worth reading slowly.

Yama and the yoni
The Bṛhat Saṃhitā gives Yama as Bharaṇī's deity.[32] Yama is the first mortal in Vedic myth, the first to die, and so the one who rules the road the dead take. Later he becomes a judge who keeps the record of what people did. The symbol in most modern lists is the yoni, the womb. Birth and death on one nakshatra is the obvious reading, and I think it is the right one: Bharani is about thresholds, the moments you carry something across.
Associations, as questions
Writers on Bharani talk about endurance, appetite, and the willingness to take responsibility for consequences. Use those as prompts. A Moon in Bharani does not make anyone intense or indulgent.
- What are you carrying right now that is close to being ready to set down?
- Where do you keep score, and is the score fair?
- Which of your appetites feeds you, and which just keeps you busy?
How to know nakshatra?
Look at the Moon's sidereal longitude at birth and see which 13°20' slice it falls in. Bharani starts at 13°20' and ends at 26°40' of sidereal Aries. Nakshatras belong to the sidereal zodiac, so a tropical-only reader needs to convert first: the nakshatra calculator does that, and the sidereal entry explains the roughly 24-degree gap.
| Pada | Sidereal span | Navamsa sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 13°20'-16°40' Aries | Leo |
| 2 | 16°40'-20°00' Aries | Virgo |
| 3 | 20°00'-23°20' Aries | Libra |
| 4 | 23°20'-26°40' Aries | Scorpio |
Muhurta uses
Bṛhat Saṃhitā puts Bharaṇī with Maghā and the three Pūrvas in the ugra (fierce) class and lists destruction, ruin, deceit, binding, poison, burning and striking with weapons as the acts these days suit.[32] That is what the text says, and softening it would misreport it. This site does not suggest harmful acts of any kind. Modern muhurta practice tends to use fierce days for endings and clearing out: closing an account you no longer use, finishing a hard conversation, throwing out what has outlived its use. Practical deadlines come first either way.
The devotional text is on the Bharani mantra page. Next door are Ashwini and Krittika.

Bṛhat Saṃhitā chapter 97 (Sanskrit edition; 98 in the English translation) supports the deity in verses 4-5 and the ugra list in verse 8.[32] The English renderings of the Sanskrit activity terms, the symbol and the prompts are editorial.
Common questions
Is Bharani nakshatra bad?
No. Bharani has a fierce muhurta class and a deity linked with death, but that describes the tradition's imagery, not the fate of anyone born under it.
What is the rashi of Bharani nakshatra?
Mesha (sidereal Aries). All four padas of Bharani sit inside Aries.
Why does Venus rule a nakshatra with Yama as its deity?
The planetary lord comes from the Vimshottari dasha order, which repeats nine planets in sequence; the deity comes from a separate, older list. The two were never designed to match.

Vedic lens
What does the Vedic lens add?
Bharani is lunar mansion 2 in the standard 27-part sidereal sequence. Its span is 13 degrees and 20 arcminutes, divided into four padas of 3 degrees and 20 arcminutes. A Moon placement should be calculated in a named ayanamsa before applying a natal interpretation.
In Vimshottari, its starting lord is Venus. The fraction of the mansion still ahead of the Moon determines the remaining balance of that first major period. This does not mean everyone with a Bharani Moon begins life with a complete Venus period.
Natal meaning and electional timing answer different questions. A birth placement is not a recommendation to schedule every important activity under the same mansion. Check the current tithi, local time, and the practical deadline separately. Our editorial prompt is to compare one familiar response with a concrete alternative before making a decision; that is a reflection exercise, not a translated classical prediction.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
