Nakshatra

Ashwini nakshatra: deity, lord, padas and muhurta

Ashwini (Aśvinī) is the first of the 27 nakshatras and covers 0°00' to 13°20' of sidereal Aries. Its deity is the Aśvins, the twin horsemen of Vedic myth, and its Vimshottari lord is Ketu. Its symbol is commonly given as a horse's head, and muhurta texts class it as laghu, or light.

What is my nakshatra?

In Vedic astrology "your nakshatra" almost always means the one the Moon was passing through when you were born, also called the janma nakshatra. The Moon crosses a nakshatra in roughly a day, so a birth date alone is not always enough; time and place settle it. Nakshatras are measured in the sidereal zodiac. If you only know your tropical (Western) chart, compute your sidereal Moon with the nakshatra calculator, and see sidereal for why the two zodiacs now sit about 24 degrees apart.

The twin horsemen

The Bṛhat Saṃhitā's list of nakshatra deities starts here, with the Aśvins.[32] In the Vedic hymns they are a pair of young riders who turn up at dawn, and they are remembered above all as healers and rescuers. The horse's head that most modern lists give as the symbol fits them neatly, though symbols vary from one source to the next and none of them is fixed by the text cited on this page.

Themes to think with

Astrologers who write about Ashwini keep returning to speed: getting there first, starting before the plan is tidy, helping someone before they finish asking. I would take that as a question about you rather than a verdict. Some people with a Moon here really are quick starters. Others are careful, and the theme shows up somewhere else, maybe in how fast they recover from a bad week.

Padas and navamsa

Pada Sidereal span Navamsa sign
1 0°00'-3°20' Aries Aries
2 3°20'-6°40' Aries Taurus
3 6°40'-10°00' Aries Gemini
4 10°00'-13°20' Aries Cancer

Pada 1 is the first slice of the whole zodiac, so it falls in Aries in both the birth chart and the navamsa. Astrologers call that vargottama and usually read it as a stronger, more concentrated placement.

Muhurta uses

Bṛhat Saṃhitā groups Ashwini with Hasta and Puṣya as laghu (light) nakshatras and lists trade, pleasure, learning, ornaments, arts, crafts, medicine and vehicles or travel as their activities.[32] Today people tend to use a light day for small starts: a first lesson, a short trip, putting something up for sale. The text names medicine as a historical category. This site does not time medical care, and a doctor's schedule or any practical deadline comes first.

The chanting text for this nakshatra lives on the Ashwini mantra page. The cycle closes with Revati just before Ashwini, and Bharani comes next.

The deity and the laghu activity list follow Bṛhat Saṃhitā chapter 97, verses 4-5 and 9, in the Sanskrit edition (chapter 98 in the English translation).[32] The English glosses of the activity words, the symbol and the reflection prompts are editorial.

Common questions

Which rashi is Ashwini nakshatra in?

All four padas of Ashwini fall in sidereal Aries (Mesha), so a Moon in Ashwini is a Mesha Moon in Vedic astrology.

Why is Ketu the lord of Ashwini?

The Vimshottari dasha system hands out nine planetary lords in a fixed, repeating order, and Ketu comes first. Ashwini, Magha and Mula each open a round of nine, so all three get Ketu.

Is Ashwini a lucky nakshatra to be born in?

No birth nakshatra is lucky or unlucky in itself. The traditional themes are material for reflection, and the rest of the chart matters at least as much.

Vedic lens

What does the Vedic lens add?

Ashwini is lunar mansion 1 in the standard 27-part sidereal sequence. Its span is 13 degrees and 20 arcminutes, divided into four padas of 3 degrees and 20 arcminutes. A Moon placement should be calculated in a named ayanamsa before applying a natal interpretation.

In Vimshottari, its starting lord is Ketu. The fraction of the mansion still ahead of the Moon determines the remaining balance of that first major period. This does not mean everyone with a Ashwini Moon begins life with a complete Ketu period.

Natal meaning and electional timing answer different questions. A birth placement is not a recommendation to schedule every important activity under the same mansion. Check the current tithi, local time, and the practical deadline separately. Our editorial prompt is to compare one familiar response with a concrete alternative before making a decision; that is a reflection exercise, not a translated classical prediction.

How we calculate

Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?

No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.

How are these results calculated?

Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
