Zodiac sign
Aries zodiac sign: dates, traits and the Vedic view
Aries is the first zodiac sign. In tropical astrology it runs from about March 21 to April 19; in sidereal (Vedic) astrology the Sun is in Aries, called Mesha, from about April 14 to May 14. It is a cardinal fire sign. Mars rules it in both systems, and its symbol is the ram.

What is March's zodiac sign?
March holds two signs. Pisces runs until about March 20, and Aries starts around March 21, the day of the March equinox. That is the tropical answer, the one most Western horoscopes use. In the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology, the whole of March falls in Pisces (Meena) and the Sun does not reach Aries until about April 14.
| Fact | Tropical (Western) | Sidereal (Vedic) |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Aries | Mesha |
| Sun dates | about Mar 21 - Apr 19 | about Apr 14 - May 14 |
| Element | Fire | Fire |
| Modality | Cardinal | Chara (movable) |
| Ruler | Mars | Mars |
| Symbol | Ram | Ram |
| Nakshatras inside the sign | not used | Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika pada 1 |
Dates move by a day from year to year because the Sun's entry into a sign is an astronomical moment, not a calendar rule. If you were born on a boundary day, check the exact time with a birth chart calculator.
Aries in the Western lens
Western astrology reads Aries as the sign of starting. It is a fire sign, so the language around it is about heat, appetite and directness, and it is cardinal, which in this tradition means it opens a season. Put those together and you get the familiar portrait: someone who would rather begin than wait, who says the thing out loud, and who gets restless when a plan sits in a meeting for three weeks.
That portrait is useful as a prompt. It is not a diagnosis. I find the better question for an Aries Sun is "where do I start fast, and where does that cost me?" Some people with Aries prominent finish everything they start; others leave a trail of first drafts. The sign describes a pull toward initiative, and the rest of the chart and your own history decide what you do with it.
A few reflection prompts that tend to fit the sign:
- When did you last act before you had full information, and how did it go?
- Who in your life slows you down in a way that actually helps?
- What would finishing one thing this month look like?
What changes in Vedic astrology?
Three things change. First, the dates: because sidereal astrology measures signs from fixed stars, its Aries now sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical one, so many people born in late March or early April are sidereal Pisces. Second, the emphasis: Jyotish usually leads with the Moon sign (rashi) and the ascendant (lagna) rather than the Sun sign. Third, the detail: sidereal Mesha contains the lunar mansions Ashwini, Bharani and the first quarter of Krittika, and a Vedic reading often says more about your nakshatra than about the sign.
The ruler does not change. Classical texts give Mars as lord of Mesha, and the Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra describes the sign as fiery and ruled by Mars.[30][31] Mesha is also where the Sun is traditionally exalted, which is why Mesha Sankranti, the Sun's sidereal entry into Aries, starts the solar new year in several Indian calendars.
What is my Vedic astrology sign?
In everyday Indian usage, "my sign" usually means the Moon's sidereal sign at birth, not the Sun's. You need a birth date, time and place to find it, because the Moon changes sign every two to three days. Your tropical Sun sign, sidereal Sun sign and Moon rashi can be three different signs, and that is normal.
Common misconceptions about Aries
- "Aries is the angry sign." Mars rules it, and Mars symbolizes drive. Drive can come out as temper, but it also shows up as courage, sport or a clean decision.
- "The 13th sign moved everyone." Constellations and signs are different things. Tropical signs are twelve equal 30-degree slices tied to the equinox, so the Ophiuchus story does not change a tropical Aries.
- "Vedic Aries is a different personality." The sign's character is described in similar terms in both systems. What changes is which people fall under it and how much weight the Sun sign gets.
- "Aries and its opposite sign, Libra, can't get along." Opposite signs often find each other interesting. Compatibility depends on whole charts and on how two people treat each other.

The sign lord follows Bṛhat Jātaka 1.6 and the separately transmitted BPHS chapter 4; the BPHS web transcription has OCR errors, so it is used as a corroborating witness.[30][31] Date ranges are standard approximations, and the personality prompts are original editorial writing rather than sourced claims.
Common questions
Is Aries the first sign in Vedic astrology too?
Yes. Mesha is the first rashi in the sidereal zodiac, and Mars is its lord. Only the dates shift, because the sidereal zodiac is measured from the stars rather than the March equinox.
Why does my app say I'm a Pisces when I was born on April 5?
Your app is probably using the sidereal zodiac. Around April 5 the tropical Sun is in Aries while the sidereal Sun is still in Pisces. Neither label is a mistake; they answer different questions.
Are all Aries people impatient?
No. A Sun sign is one factor among many. The Moon, the rising sign and the rest of the chart change how any sign shows up, and plenty of Aries Suns are patient people.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
