Nakshatra

Mula nakshatra: Nirṛti, Ketu and the roots

Mula (Mūla) is the nineteenth nakshatra and opens sidereal Sagittarius, from 0°00' to 13°20'. Its deity is Nirṛti, the Vedic goddess of dissolution, and its Vimshottari lord is Ketu. The symbol is commonly given as a bunch of roots, and the name itself means "root." Classical muhurta places Mula in the tīkṣṇa, or sharp, class.

Mula: tied roots on a stone ledge at night
Mula

Mula points at the center of the galaxy, which in the sidereal zodiac sits close to the start of Sagittarius. Whether or not the old astronomers knew that, they named this nakshatra "root," and they gave it to the goddess of things coming apart.

Nirṛti, the goddess of undoing

Mūla's deity is Nirṛti in the Sanskrit Bṛhat Saṃhitā sequence, and Drik Panchang's Mūla page agrees.[32][26] One English translation's table prints Prajāpati here, which is why you will see both names online; this site follows the Sanskrit. Nirṛti is decay, disorder and loss, the force the Vedic hymns ask to stay far away. Her presence here makes Mula the nakshatra of getting to the bottom of things, including things you would rather leave buried.

Digging questions

Readers associate Mula with research, radical honesty and the urge to start again from nothing. As prompts:

Which nakshatra is good?

All of them, for something. Muhurta sorts nakshatras by the kind of work they suit, and a sharp one like Mula is the classical choice for an ending, while a soft one suits a celebration. For a birth nakshatra "good" does not apply: it gives you themes, not a grade. Mula's reputation as a difficult birth star is a ritual custom, and fear is the wrong response to it.

Nakshatras are sidereal; tropical-only readers can find their sidereal Moon with the nakshatra calculator and read sidereal for why it differs.

Pada Sidereal span Navamsa sign
1 0°00'-3°20' Sagittarius Aries
2 3°20'-6°40' Sagittarius Taurus
3 6°40'-10°00' Sagittarius Gemini
4 10°00'-13°20' Sagittarius Cancer

Muhurta uses

Bṛhat Saṃhitā lists Mūla first among the tīkṣṇa (sharp) nakshatras, with Ārdrā, Jyeṣṭhā and Āśleṣā, for attack, incantation, raising spirits, binding, killing and causing division.[32] That is what the verse says. This site does not suggest harmful acts. Modern muhurta practice tends to use sharp days for endings, clearing out and hard conversations, and practical deadlines come before any of it.

The verse and its notes are on the Mula mantra page. Jyeshtha precedes it; Purva Ashadha follows.

Source review

Nirṛti as Mūla's deity rests on the Sanskrit Bṛhat Saṃhitā chapter 97, verses 4-5, with Drik Panchang as an independent witness.[32][26] The tīkṣṇa list is verse 7 of the same chapter (98 in the English translation).[32] The galactic-center note, English glosses, symbol and prompts are editorial.

Common questions

What is the rashi of Moola nakshatra?

Dhanu, or sidereal Sagittarius. All four padas of Mula are in that sign.

Who is the lord of Mula nakshatra?

Ketu, in the Vimshottari dasha scheme. Mula opens the third round of nine lords, just as Ashwini and Magha open the first two.

Is a Mula birth harmful to a parent?

No. Some families perform a pacifying rite for Mula births, especially early padas, as a ritual custom. There is no basis for treating a child's birth nakshatra as a threat to anyone.

Vedic lens

What does the Vedic lens add?

Mula is lunar mansion 19 in the standard 27-part sidereal sequence. Its span is 13 degrees and 20 arcminutes, divided into four padas of 3 degrees and 20 arcminutes. A Moon placement should be calculated in a named ayanamsa before applying a natal interpretation.

In Vimshottari, its starting lord is Ketu. The fraction of the mansion still ahead of the Moon determines the remaining balance of that first major period. This does not mean everyone with a Mula Moon begins life with a complete Ketu period.

Natal meaning and electional timing answer different questions. A birth placement is not a recommendation to schedule every important activity under the same mansion. Check the current tithi, local time, and the practical deadline separately. Our editorial prompt is to compare one familiar response with a concrete alternative before making a decision; that is a reflection exercise, not a translated classical prediction.

How we calculate

Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?

No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.

How are these results calculated?

Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
