What is December's zodiac sign?

Tropical astrology splits December at the solstice: Sagittarius until about December 21, Capricorn after. The sidereal zodiac splits it in the middle of the month instead. December 1 to about December 15 is sidereal Scorpio (Vrischika), and sidereal Sagittarius (Dhanu) starts near December 16 and runs into mid-January.

Sagittarius in the Western lens

Fire supplies enthusiasm, mutable supplies restlessness, and Jupiter supplies the big picture: philosophy, faith, long trips, higher learning. The Western Sagittarius is the person who asks "but why?" and then books a flight to find out.

The stereotype is the friend who's great at parties and hard to pin down. Some of that is fair. Sagittarius gets bored when life shrinks. But the sign is also linked with teaching and belief, and the most Sagittarian people I can think of are the ones who keep a principle when it would be easier to drop it. Blunt honesty comes with the package. It's not always tactful.

What changes in Vedic astrology?

Dates first: sidereal Dhanu starts about 24 days later, so most tropical Sagittarians have a sidereal Scorpio Sun.

Then emphasis. Jupiter, called Guru (teacher) in Jyotish, is regarded as the great benefic, and Dhanu is one of its two signs. A Vedic astrologer will usually look at the Moon sign and ascendant before the Sun, and will check Jupiter's condition when Dhanu is prominent. Bṛhat Jātaka gives Jupiter as lord of the ninth sign, matching the Western ruler.[30]

The nakshatras inside sidereal Dhanu have strong characters. Mula, at the very start of the sign, is associated with roots and with the deity Nirṛti, and is often discussed in Vedic texts as a demanding nakshatra. Purva Ashadha and the first pada of Uttara Ashadha follow. Two people with a Sagittarius Moon can get very different readings depending on which of the three the Moon occupies.

In parts of India the month the Sun spends in sidereal Dhanu is also treated in some communities as a less favored time for weddings, though customs vary by region.

Start with three things: the lagna (ascendant sign, which sets the houses), the Moon's sign and nakshatra, and the current dasha period. Common misconceptions about Sagittarius

1. "Sagittarius is lucky." Jupiter is associated with growth and generosity. Being associated with luck in a textbook is not the same as being lucky.
2. "Sagittarius and Gemini can't work together." Opposite signs share an axis: here, information and meaning. They often make good conversation partners.
3. "Mula is a bad nakshatra to be born in." Some traditions treat it as intense. Intensity is not misfortune, and no birth placement determines a life.

Dhanu means bow in Sanskrit. The sign is pictured as an archer, sometimes with the lower body of a horse, much like the Western centaur.

Is everyone born in December a Sagittarius?

No. Tropical Sagittarius ends around December 21, when Capricorn begins. In the sidereal zodiac most of December is still Scorpio.

Are Sagittarians bad at commitment?

The sign is linked with travel and freedom, which feeds that stereotype. Commitment depends on the person and the whole chart, and many Sagittarius Suns are very loyal.
