Nakshatra
Shravana nakshatra: Viṣṇu, the Moon and listening
Shravana (Śravaṇa) is the twenty-second nakshatra and sits inside sidereal Capricorn, from 10°00' to 23°20'. Its god is Viṣṇu and its Vimshottari lord is the Moon. The symbol is commonly given as an ear or three footprints. Later muhurta tradition usually classes Shravana as cara, or movable.
Draft · specialist source review requested

Śravaṇa comes from the verb "to hear." In a tradition where sacred knowledge was passed on by ear for centuries before anyone wrote it down, a nakshatra named for listening was always going to be associated with learning.

Viṣṇu and the three steps
The Bṛhat Saṃhitā gives Viṣṇu as Śravaṇa's deity.[32] The three footprints in modern symbol lists come from his best-known Vedic feat: in three strides he measured out earth, sky and the space beyond. The ear and the footprints look unrelated, but both are about taking something in fully, whether a teaching or the whole world.
Listening prompts
Shravana Moons are often described as attentive, studious and good at remembering what they hear. Use that as a set of questions rather than a label:
- Who do you listen to most closely, and who never gets a full hearing from you?
- What did you learn by ear, from a person rather than a page?
- What step are you taking slowly because you want to get it right?
What is moon sign in astrology?
Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied when you were born. Western astrology reads it as your emotional habits; Vedic astrology often treats it as your main sign, the rashi, and the nakshatra narrows it further. A Shravana Moon is always a Capricorn Moon in the sidereal zodiac, though it may be Aquarius in a tropical chart. Tropical-only readers should compute their sidereal Moon with the nakshatra calculator; the sidereal entry explains the shift.
| Pada | Sidereal span | Navamsa sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10°00'-13°20' Capricorn | Aries |
| 2 | 13°20'-16°40' Capricorn | Taurus |
| 3 | 16°40'-20°00' Capricorn | Gemini |
| 4 | 20°00'-23°20' Capricorn | Cancer |
Muhurta uses
The Bṛhat Saṃhitā verses this site has checked do not give Śravaṇa a class. Later manuals usually group it with Punarvasu, Svātī, Dhaniṣṭhā and Śatabhiṣaj as cara (movable) and use it for travel, vehicles and starts that involve movement; many also favor it for beginning study. Treat that as later practice awaiting a source check. Practical deadlines come first.
The chant itself is on the Shravana mantra page. Before Shravana is Uttara Ashadha, and after it Dhanishtha.
Source review
Viṣṇu as Śravaṇa's deity is from Bṛhat Saṃhitā chapter 97, verses 4-5, in the Sanskrit edition (98 in the English translation).[32] The cara class, the three-strides note, the symbol and the prompts are not from that text.

Vedic lens
What does the Vedic lens add?
Shravana is lunar mansion 22 in the standard 27-part sidereal sequence. Its span is 13 degrees and 20 arcminutes, divided into four padas of 3 degrees and 20 arcminutes. A Moon placement should be calculated in a named ayanamsa before applying a natal interpretation.
In Vimshottari, its starting lord is Moon. The fraction of the mansion still ahead of the Moon determines the remaining balance of that first major period. This does not mean everyone with a Shravana Moon begins life with a complete Moon period.
Natal meaning and electional timing answer different questions. A birth placement is not a recommendation to schedule every important activity under the same mansion. Check the current tithi, local time, and the practical deadline separately. Our editorial prompt is to compare one familiar response with a concrete alternative before making a decision; that is a reflection exercise, not a translated classical prediction.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
