Zodiac sign

Capricorn zodiac sign: dates, traits and the Vedic view

Capricorn is the tenth zodiac sign. Tropical Capricorn starts at the December solstice, about December 22, and runs to January 19. In sidereal (Vedic) astrology the Sun is in Capricorn, called Makara, from about January 14 to February 12. It is a cardinal earth sign ruled by Saturn; its symbol is the sea-goat.

What zodiac sign is January?

The tropical answer is Capricorn until about January 19, then Aquarius from about January 20. The sidereal answer is Sagittarius (Dhanu) until about January 13, then Capricorn (Makara) from about January 14. In practice that means a January 10 birthday is Capricorn in Western astrology and Sagittarius in Vedic astrology, and a January 25 birthday is Aquarius and Capricorn respectively.

Capricorn in the Western lens

Earth makes Capricorn practical, cardinal makes it a starter, and Saturn gives it time, structure and limits. The Western portrait is the builder: someone who thinks in years, respects what works and is willing to do the boring part to get somewhere.

Capricorn's bad press is about coldness and status-chasing. I don't buy it as a rule. The sign is about responsibility, and responsible people are often the warmest ones in a room once you notice what they're carrying. The real risk is different. Capricorn-heavy charts are often described as postponing rest and pleasure until some milestone that keeps moving.

Prompts:

What changes in Vedic astrology?

Sidereal Makara begins about 24 days after the solstice, on or around January 14. That date is Makar Sankranti, a harvest festival known in different regions as Pongal, Uttarayan, Maghi and Bihu, among other names. It marks the Sun's sidereal ingress into Capricorn, which is why its date barely moves on the Gregorian calendar while lunar festivals shift around.

Jyotish shares Saturn as the lord of the tenth sign; Bṛhat Jātaka lists Saturn for Makara.[30] The classical dignity scheme also places Mars's exaltation in Makara and Jupiter's debilitation there, both of which a Vedic astrologer would weigh when reading a Capricorn placement.

The nakshatras inside sidereal Capricorn include all of Shravana, linked with listening and with Vishnu, plus most of Uttara Ashadha and the first half of Dhanishtha. Listening is an apt word for a Saturn sign that learns by paying attention.

What does "sea-goat" have to do with Makara?

Both symbols are hybrids. The Western sea-goat has a goat's front and a fish's tail; the Indian makara is a water creature that appears in temple art and as the vehicle of the river goddess Ganga. Neither is a literal goat, which is a useful reminder that zodiac symbols are old images, not descriptions of people.

Common misconceptions about Capricorn

  1. "Capricorns don't have feelings." Earth signs are described as reserved, not empty. Reserve is a style of expression.
  2. "Saturn means bad luck." In both traditions Saturn is linked with time, effort and consequences. Hard does not mean bad.
  3. "Capricorn and Cancer are too different." They are opposite signs that share the axis of home and public life. Many households run on exactly that pairing.

Common questions

What is Makar Sankranti?

It is the Sun's entry into sidereal Capricorn (Makara), around January 14, celebrated as a harvest festival across India under several regional names. It is one of the few Hindu festivals fixed to the solar calendar.

Why is Capricorn a sea-goat?

The Western symbol is a goat with a fish's tail. The Sanskrit Makara is a sea creature, often drawn like a crocodile, so both traditions give the sign a water-and-land image.

Are Capricorns workaholics?

Some are. Capricorn is linked with ambition and structure, but ambition can be for a family, a craft or a community as easily as for a job title.

How we calculate

Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?

No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.

How are these results calculated?

Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
