The two Phalgunīs are a pair, the front and back legs of one bed. Purva Phalguni is the lying down. Uttara Phalguni, "the later Phalgunī," is the getting up again and keeping your word.

Aryaman and the contract
The Bṛhat Saṃhitā gives Aryaman as Uttara Phalgunī's deity.[32] Aryaman is the Āditya of hospitality, friendship and the customs that hold a marriage or an alliance together. Where his neighbor Bhaga hands out the share, Aryaman makes sure the agreement around it is honored. That is why this nakshatra is so often linked with reliability and patronage.
Prompts on keeping agreements
- Which promise have you kept long after anyone would have blamed you for dropping it?
- Who relies on you, and have you told them what you need in return?
- Where would a written agreement save a friendship some trouble?
What is the difference between western and Vedic astrology?
The biggest technical difference is the zodiac. Western astrology mostly uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons, while Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars, and the two now sit about 24 degrees apart. Vedic practice also leans on the Moon, the nakshatras and dasha periods. Nakshatras exist only in the sidereal frame, so a tropical-only reader should compute their sidereal Moon with the nakshatra calculator. The sidereal entry has more.
| Pada | Sidereal span | Navamsa sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 26°40'-30°00' Leo | Sagittarius |
| 2 | 0°00'-3°20' Virgo | Capricorn |
| 3 | 3°20'-6°40' Virgo | Aquarius |
| 4 | 6°40'-10°00' Virgo | Pisces |
Muhurta uses
Bṛhat Saṃhitā groups the three Uttaras with Rohiṇī as dhruva (fixed) and lists consecration, pacifying rites, planting trees, founding a town, religious duty, sowing seed and beginnings meant to last.[32] Given Aryaman, it is no surprise that many families still look for this nakshatra for weddings and partnership agreements. A practical deadline comes before any of that.
The chant for Uttara Phalguni is on its mantra page. Purva Phalguni is the other half of the bed, and Hasta follows.
Source review
Aryaman as deity (verses 4-5) and the dhruva list (verse 6) come from Bṛhat Saṃhitā chapter 97 in the Sanskrit edition, numbered 98 in the English translation.[32] The wedding custom, the English glosses, the symbol and the prompts are editorial.

Vedic lens
What does the Vedic lens add?
Uttara Phalguni is lunar mansion 12 in the standard 27-part sidereal sequence. Its span is 13 degrees and 20 arcminutes, divided into four padas of 3 degrees and 20 arcminutes. A Moon placement should be calculated in a named ayanamsa before applying a natal interpretation.
In Vimshottari, its starting lord is Sun. The fraction of the mansion still ahead of the Moon determines the remaining balance of that first major period. This does not mean everyone with a Uttara Phalguni Moon begins life with a complete Sun period.
Natal meaning and electional timing answer different questions. A birth placement is not a recommendation to schedule every important activity under the same mansion. Check the current tithi, local time, and the practical deadline separately. Our editorial prompt is to compare one familiar response with a concrete alternative before making a decision; that is a reflection exercise, not a translated classical prediction.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
