Leo zodiac sign: dates, traits and the Vedic view
Leo is the fifth zodiac sign. In tropical astrology it runs from about July 23 to August 22; in sidereal (Vedic) astrology the Sun is in Leo, called Simha, from about August 17 to September 16. It is a fixed fire sign, ruled by the Sun in both systems, and its symbol is the lion.

| Fact | Tropical (Western) | Sidereal (Vedic) |

August is mostly Leo in the tropical zodiac, with Virgo arriving around August 23. In the sidereal zodiac most of August is still Cancer (Karka), and Simha begins near August 17. If your birthday sits within a day of a boundary, a birth chart calculator settles it.
Leo in the Western lens
Fire gives Leo warmth and appetite; being a fixed sign gives it staying power. The Sun as ruler adds the idea of a center that other things orbit. So Western astrology describes Leo as the sign of self-expression and loyalty: someone who wants to make something, be seen making it, and keep showing up for the people in their circle.
The cartoon version is a person who needs applause. I'd push back on that. Wanting to be seen is common to everyone, and Leo is simply the sign where astrology names it out loud. The more interesting question is what you do when nobody is watching. A lot of Leo-heavy charts belong to people who are generous in private and shy in public.
Prompts that tend to land:
- What did you make this year that was fully yours?
- When you want recognition, is it for the work or for being liked?
- Who do you hype up, and who hypes you up?
What is Leo's moon sign?
There isn't one fixed answer. A person with the Sun in Leo can have the Moon in any of the twelve signs, because the Moon moves through the whole zodiac in about 27 days. "Leo moon" usually means the Moon was in Leo at birth, which is a separate placement from the Sun sign. You need the birth date, time and place to find it; see Moon in Leo for that reading.
What changes in Vedic astrology?
The dates move about 24 days, because the sidereal zodiac is anchored to the stars rather than the equinox. That puts most tropical Leos in sidereal Cancer.
The emphasis moves too. Jyotish treats the Sun as one of nine grahas and usually leads with the Moon and the ascendant. A Leo ascendant (Simha lagna) gets read through the Sun's condition, and the Sun's placement and strength become a big part of the story.
Sidereal Simha holds Magha, ruled by the ancestors in the deity tradition, all of Purva Phalguni and the first pada of Uttara Phalguni. A Vedic reading of a Leo placement often says more about which of these nakshatras is involved than about the sign alone.
The ruler is the same. Bṛhat Jātaka lists the Sun as lord of the fifth sign.[30]
Which is more accurate vedic or western astrology?
Neither has evidence of being more accurate, in the sense of predicting personality or events under test conditions. They are two traditions with different starting points: the seasons for tropical astrology, the stars for sidereal. Use whichever framework helps you reflect, and be cautious with anyone who claims one is scientifically proven.
Common misconceptions about Leo
- "Leos are always the loudest." Fire signs are expressive, but expression can be a painting or a spreadsheet.
- "Leo and Aquarius clash because they're opposite." Opposite signs often balance each other: here, the individual and the group.
- "All Leos are born in August." Tropical Leo starts in late July, and sidereal Leo runs into mid-September.

The sign lord follows Bṛhat Jātaka 1.6.[30] Date ranges are standard approximations; the deity note for Magha follows the site's settled nakshatra table. Reflection prompts are original editorial writing.
Common questions
What planet rules Leo?
The Sun. It is the only sign the Sun rules, in Western and Vedic astrology alike.
Is a Leo Sun in Vedic astrology the same as in Western astrology?
Only for birthdays in the last week or so of tropical Leo. Most tropical Leos have the Sun in sidereal Cancer, because sidereal Leo starts around August 17.
Are Leos self-centered?
The stereotype comes from the Sun's link to the self and to visibility. Many Leo Suns are generous hosts and quiet leaders. The full chart says far more than the Sun sign.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
