Virgo zodiac sign: dates, traits and the Vedic view
Virgo is the sixth zodiac sign. Tropical Virgo runs from about August 23 to September 22; sidereal (Vedic) Virgo, called Kanya, holds the Sun from about September 17 to October 16. It is a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury in both systems, and its symbol is a young woman holding grain or a lamp.

Tropical Virgo ends at the September equinox, give or take a day. The sidereal sign starts almost four weeks later. If you were born between about August 23 and September 16, your Sun is Virgo in one zodiac and Leo in the other; a birth chart calculator will show you both.
Virgo in the Western lens
Earth is practical. Mutable is adaptive. Mercury is about analysis, language and small moving parts. The Western Virgo is what you get from combining them: someone who notices what isn't working and wants to fix it, ideally with a checklist.
The sign gets saddled with "critical" and "neat freak." Neither is fair as a blanket description. A better frame is usefulness. Virgo is the sign astrology connects with craft, health routines and service, the kind of work that makes other work possible. A Virgo-heavy chart can belong to a nurse, an editor, a mechanic or a gardener; the common thread is attention, not tidiness.
Where it can get hard is turning that attention inward. Some questions worth asking:

What is Virgo moon sign?
A Virgo Moon means the Moon was in Virgo when you were born. It is separate from the Sun sign: a Virgo Sun can have any Moon sign, and a Virgo Moon can come with any Sun. What changes in Vedic astrology?
In Jyotish the Sun sign is rarely the headline. Readings lead with the Moon sign and the lagna (ascendant), and the sidereal zodiac moves every sign about 24 degrees, so many tropical Virgos are sidereal Leos.
Kanya is a well-loved sign for Mercury. Classical dignity tables give Mercury both rulership and exaltation here, and list Venus as debilitated in Kanya. A Vedic astrologer reading a Virgo placement will look at those dignities before saying much about personality.
The nakshatras matter too. Sidereal Kanya holds most of Uttara Phalguni, all of Hasta (the hand, linked with skill and craft) and half of Chitra. Hasta's craft associations fit the Western picture of Virgo surprisingly well.
Bṛhat Jātaka lists Mercury as lord of the sixth sign, the same ruler the Western tradition uses.[30]
What is my Vedic astrology sign?
Most people who ask this mean their Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac, which Indian astrologers call the rashi. Some mean the sidereal Sun sign. Both need a calculation: the Sun sign from your birth date, the Moon sign from the date, time and place. Expect the answer to differ from your Western Sun sign.
Common misconceptions about Virgo
- "Virgo is cold." Earth signs are described as steady, and steadiness can read as reserve. Many Virgos show care through practical help rather than words.
- "Virgo and Pisces are opposites, so they cancel out." They share the axis of service: one practical, one imaginative. That can be a good team.
- "Virgo means virgin, so the sign is about purity." The maiden image comes from harvest symbolism, and the Vedic picture of Kanya holds grain and fire.

Common questions
Which planet rules Virgo?
Mercury, in both Western and Vedic astrology. In the classical scheme Mercury is also exalted in Virgo, which is unusual, since few planets are both ruler and exalted in the same sign.
Is everyone born in September a Virgo?
No. Tropical Virgo ends around September 22, and in the sidereal zodiac most of September is still Leo.
Are Virgos perfectionists?
Some are. Virgo is described as detail-minded and practical, but that can show up as craft, care or usefulness as easily as perfectionism.
