Zodiac sign
Gemini zodiac sign: dates, traits and the Vedic view
Gemini is the third zodiac sign. In tropical astrology it runs from about May 21 to June 20; in sidereal (Vedic) astrology the Sun is in Gemini, called Mithuna, from about June 15 to July 15. It is a mutable air sign ruled by Mercury in both systems, and its symbol is the twins.

What is June's zodiac sign?
In tropical astrology June holds two signs. Gemini runs until about June 20, and Cancer begins at the June solstice, around June 21. The sidereal zodiac draws the lines elsewhere: most of June is sidereal Taurus (Vrishabha), and the Sun enters sidereal Gemini near June 15.
| Fact | Tropical (Western) | Sidereal (Vedic) |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Gemini | Mithuna |
| Sun dates | about May 21 - Jun 20 | about Jun 15 - Jul 15 |
| Element | Air | Air |
| Modality | Mutable | Dvisvabhava (dual) |
| Ruler | Mercury | Mercury (Budha) |
| Symbol | Twins | A pair, often shown with a mace and a lute |
| Nakshatras inside the sign | not used | Mrigashira 3-4, Ardra, Punarvasu 1-3 |
Sign changes happen at a specific minute that drifts a little from year to year. If you were born on May 20 or 21, or on June 20 or 21, run your birth data through a birth chart calculator instead of trusting a date list.
Gemini in the Western lens
Air signs are described through thought and exchange, and mutable signs through adaptation. Put Mercury on top and the Western portrait of Gemini writes itself: curious, verbal, quick to switch topics, happiest with two books open and a group chat going.
I like the curiosity part of that portrait and distrust the rest. "Scattered" gets attached to Gemini a lot, and it is often just a description of someone with more than one interest. The more honest question is about follow-through. A Gemini-heavy chart can pick up a skill fast; whether it sticks around long enough to get deep is up to the person.
Some prompts for a Gemini Sun, or anyone with a lot of Gemini in the chart:
- Which conversation this month actually changed your mind about something?
- What are you learning only because it's new, and what would you keep learning if it got boring?
- When you talk a problem through, do you need a listener, or a decision?
What changes in Vedic astrology?
The calendar shifts. Because sidereal signs sit roughly 24 degrees behind tropical ones, most people with a tropical Gemini Sun have a sidereal Taurus Sun. If your app shows Taurus and your friend's app shows Gemini, you may both be right.
The focus shifts as well. A Jyotish reading usually leads with the Moon sign (rashi) and the ascendant (lagna), and then the Moon's nakshatra. Sidereal Mithuna holds the second half of Mrigashira, all of Ardra and most of Punarvasu, three lunar mansions with quite different traditional characters, so two people with a Gemini Moon can get very different readings.
The rulership does not change. Bṛhat Jātaka lists Mercury as lord of the third sign, and the BPHS transcription describes Gemini as an airy sign, pictured as a pair holding a mace and a lute, with Mercury as its ruler.[30][31]
What is the difference between western and vedic astrology?
The short version: different zodiacs and different emphasis. Western astrology usually uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the March equinox, and leads with the Sun sign. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars, leads with the Moon and the ascendant, and adds nakshatras and dasha periods for timing. Sign meanings overlap a lot. Which people fall under each sign is what really differs.
Common misconceptions about Gemini
- "Geminis can't commit." Mutable signs are described as adaptable. Adaptable people commit all the time; they just tend to renegotiate the details.
- "Gemini and Sagittarius are enemies because they're opposite." Opposite signs share an axis, here learning and meaning. Plenty of people find the contrast useful.
- "The twins mean a split personality." The symbol is about pairs and exchange. It is not a psychological diagnosis, and no sign is.
Source review
The sign lord and the air classification follow Bṛhat Jātaka 1.6 and the BPHS chapter 4 transcription, which has OCR errors and is used as a corroborating witness.[30][31] Date ranges are standard approximations; reflection prompts are original editorial writing.
Common questions
What does Mithuna mean?
Mithuna is the Sanskrit name for the third sign. It means a pair or couple, and the sign is often pictured as two figures together.
Are Geminis two-faced?
No. The twins symbol points to duality and conversation, not dishonesty. Plenty of Gemini Suns are blunt and consistent; the rest of the chart matters more than the stereotype.
Which planet rules Gemini?
Mercury, in Western and Vedic astrology alike. Mercury also rules Virgo.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
