Zodiac sign

Aquarius zodiac sign: dates, traits and the Vedic view

Aquarius is the eleventh zodiac sign. Tropical Aquarius runs from about January 20 to February 18; in sidereal (Vedic) astrology the Sun is in Aquarius, called Kumbha, from about February 13 to March 13. It is a fixed air sign. Saturn rules it traditionally and in Vedic astrology; modern Western astrology adds Uranus.

What is February's zodiac sign?

In the tropical zodiac February is split between Aquarius, which runs until about February 18, and Pisces, which starts around February 19. In the sidereal zodiac the split comes earlier in the cycle: February begins in Capricorn (Makara) and the Sun enters sidereal Aquarius (Kumbha) around February 13.

Aquarius in the Western lens

The Western Aquarius is the sign of the group and the future: friends, networks, causes, inventions, the odd idea that turns out to be right ten years early. Air gives it the head-first approach; fixed gives it conviction. Saturn and Uranus make an odd pair of rulers, one about structure and the other about breaking it, and that tension is basically the sign's whole personality in the textbooks.

People call Aquarius aloof. I think "independent" is closer, with a side of "would rather discuss a principle than a feeling." That can make close relationships work on unusual terms: lots of space, lots of honesty, not much fuss. It can also mean the Aquarius-heavy person cares more easily about humanity than about the human in front of them, which is worth noticing.

What changes in Vedic astrology?

The calendar moves by about 24 days. Most tropical Aquarians are sidereal Capricorns, since sidereal Kumbha starts in mid-February.

The rulers simplify. Vedic astrology does not use Uranus, so Saturn alone rules Kumbha, just as it rules Makara. Bṛhat Jātaka lists Saturn as lord of the eleventh sign.[30] That gives Vedic Aquarius a steadier, more serious flavor than the modern Western version.

The nakshatras inside sidereal Kumbha are the second half of Dhanishtha, all of Shatabhisha, whose deity is Varuna, lord of the waters, and most of Purva Bhadrapada. So there is water in Vedic Aquarius after all, at the nakshatra level.

How many nakshatra are there?

Twenty-seven in standard use, each spanning 13°20' of the sidereal zodiac. Some older lists add a 28th, Abhijit, which is still used in a few timing methods. Each sign covers two and a quarter nakshatras, which is why Aquarius holds parts of three. The nakshatra guide lists them all.

Common misconceptions about Aquarius

  1. "Aquarius is a water sign." Air. The water bearer pours; it doesn't swim.
  2. "The Age of Aquarius has started." Astrologers disagree about when, or whether, it begins, and the answer depends on how constellation boundaries are drawn. Treat confident dates with suspicion.
  3. "Aquarians don't do commitment." Fixed signs are described as the most consistent in the zodiac. Aquarius commits to people and ideas; it may just define the commitment its own way.

The sign lord follows Bṛhat Jātaka 1.6.[30] The Shatabhisha deity follows the site's settled nakshatra table; the Abhijit note and dates are standard traditional and astronomical information, not separately cited. Reflection prompts are original editorial writing.

Common questions

Is Aquarius a water sign?

No, despite the name and the water bearer. Aquarius is an air sign. The water being poured is usually read as knowledge or ideas shared with others.

What does Kumbha mean?

Kumbha means pot or water jar in Sanskrit. The sign is pictured as a person holding a pot, close to the Western water bearer.

Are Aquarians detached?

Air and fixed together can come across as cool and principled. Many Aquarius Suns are deeply loyal to friends and causes; the rest of the chart shapes how warm they seem.

How we calculate

Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?

No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.

How are these results calculated?

Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
