Zodiac sign
Cardinal, fixed and mutable signs: zodiac modalities
Zodiac modalities sort the twelve signs by how they act. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start things. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) sustain them. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt and finish. Vedic astrology uses the same three groups as movable, fixed and dual.

Which signs are cardinal, fixed and mutable?
Dates are the Sun's computed sign ingresses for 2027 in UTC; they move by about a day from year to year. Sidereal dates use the Lahiri ayanamsa.

| Modality | Signs | Vedic name | Season link (tropical, Northern Hemisphere) | Short version |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cardinal | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | Chara (movable) | First month of spring, summer, autumn, winter | Starts |
| Fixed | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | Sthira (fixed) | Middle month of each season | Holds |
| Mutable | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | Dvisvabhava (dual) | Last month of each season | Adapts |
Modalities are sometimes called qualities or quadruplicities, because each group has four signs. Each group also contains one sign of each element, so the twelve signs are every possible combination of four elements and three modalities.
Cardinal signs: the starters
The cardinal signs open the seasons in the tropical zodiac: Aries at the March equinox, Cancer at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox and Capricorn at the December solstice. Astrology reads them as initiating. They're the people who send the first email, call the meeting, pick the restaurant.
The element changes how they start. Aries starts by acting, Cancer by protecting, Libra by connecting and Capricorn by organizing. The shared risk is momentum without follow-through, so cardinal-heavy charts tend to benefit from a partner or habit that keeps things going.
Fixed signs: the sustainers
Fixed signs sit in the middle of each season, when the weather has settled. They're read as persistent, loyal and resistant to change. Taurus holds onto comfort and resources, Leo onto creative identity, Scorpio onto bonds and secrets, Aquarius onto principles.
Fixed energy is why projects survive past the exciting first week. Its shadow is stubbornness. The useful question for a fixed-heavy chart is not "how do I change?" but "which of the things I'm holding still deserve it?"
Mutable signs: the adapters
Mutable signs end each season, when one kind of weather is turning into the next. They're read as flexible, curious and good at transitions. Gemini adapts through information, Virgo through adjustment and repair, Sagittarius through exploration, Pisces through empathy.
Mutable signs finish things and prepare the ground for the next start. Their difficulty is scattering: saying yes to too much, or changing course before anything lands.
How to count modalities in your chart
Use the same placements you'd use for elements: Sun, Moon, rising sign, Mercury, Venus and Mars. Count how many fall in cardinal, fixed and mutable signs. A chart with many cardinal placements and no fixed ones, for example, often describes someone who launches easily and has to work at staying power. You can get the placements from the birth chart calculator.
Modalities in Vedic astrology
Jyotish uses the same three groups under Sanskrit names: chara (movable), sthira (fixed) and dvisvabhava (dual, literally "two natures"). They line up with the Western groups sign for sign.
Two differences matter. The sidereal dates are about 24 days later, so the neat season link belongs to the tropical zodiac; sidereal Aries begins in mid-April, weeks after the equinox. And the Vedic groups are used heavily in timing. Muhurta guidance commonly favors a fixed sign rising for things meant to last, such as moving into a home, and a movable sign for travel or for actions meant to change things. Those are traditional rules of thumb, and a practical deadline still comes first.
Common misconceptions
- "Fixed signs can't change." They change more slowly, and usually only when the change makes sense to them.
- "Mutable signs are flaky." Adaptability is what lets them handle transitions other signs dread.
- "Cardinal signs are bossy." Starting things is not the same as controlling them.
- "The seasons apply everywhere." The season link is a Northern Hemisphere image. Astrologers in the Southern Hemisphere mostly keep the same sign meanings anyway, which tells you the modalities are about pattern, not weather.

The modality groups and Sanskrit names are standard to both traditions. The muhurta rules of thumb summarize common practice and are not separately cited here; see the nakshatra pages for the cited Bṛhat Saṃhitā timing classes. Descriptions are original editorial writing.
Common questions
What are the cardinal signs?
Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. In the tropical zodiac each begins at an equinox or solstice, which is where the idea of "starting a season" comes from.
What is the difference between modality and element?
Element describes the kind of energy (fire, earth, air, water). Modality describes how that energy moves (starting, holding, changing). Every sign has one of each, and no two signs share both.
What are modalities called in Vedic astrology?
Chara (movable) for cardinal, sthira (fixed) for fixed, and dvisvabhava (dual) for mutable. Muhurta practice uses these classes when choosing times for different kinds of activity.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
