Libra zodiac sign: dates, traits and the Vedic view
Libra is the seventh zodiac sign. Tropical Libra runs from about September 23, the September equinox, to October 22. In the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology, the Sun is in Libra, called Tula, from about October 17 to November 15. It is a cardinal air sign ruled by Venus, symbolized by the scales.

What zodiac sign is October?
Two signs share October in the tropical zodiac: Libra until about October 22, then Scorpio. In the sidereal zodiac most of October is Virgo (Kanya), and the Sun reaches sidereal Libra near October 17. So an October 10 birthday is Libra in a Western chart and Virgo in a Vedic one.
| Fact | Tropical (Western) | Sidereal (Vedic) |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Libra | Tula |
| Sun dates | about Sep 23 - Oct 22 | about Oct 17 - Nov 15 |
| Element | Air | Air |
| Modality | Cardinal | Chara (movable) |
| Ruler | Venus | Venus (Shukra) |
| Symbol | Scales | A person holding a balance |
| Nakshatras inside the sign | not used | Chitra 3-4, Swati, Vishakha 1-3 |
Tropical Libra starts at the September equinox, when day and night are roughly equal, which is a tidy match for the scales. The exact moment moves a little each year; check a birth chart calculator if you were born on September 22 or 23.
Libra in the Western lens
Libra is air, so it lives in ideas and conversation. It is cardinal, so it starts things. And Venus rules it, so what it tends to start are relationships, agreements and arrangements that look right. In the Western reading, Libra is the sign of the other person: partnership, fairness, the urge to see a situation from the far side of the table.
People love to call Libras indecisive. I'd call it something closer to "unwilling to decide before the facts are in," which is a fine quality in a judge and a tiring one at a restaurant. The harder Libra pattern is keeping the peace at your own expense. That is worth watching for.
Questions to sit with:
- Where are you being fair to everyone except yourself?
- What would you choose if nobody's opinion counted but yours?
- Which relationship in your life feels balanced, and what makes it so?
What changes in Vedic astrology?
The dates shift by roughly 24 days, the gap between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs, so most tropical Libras have the Sun in sidereal Virgo.
The emphasis shifts too. Jyotish leads with the Moon sign and the ascendant. It also pays close attention to dignity, and Tula is a notable sign for it: the classical scheme makes Saturn exalted here and the Sun debilitated. A Vedic astrologer seeing a Libra Sun will read that as the Sun in a weak dignity and then look at the rest of the chart before concluding anything. A weak dignity is not a verdict on a person.
Sidereal Tula contains the second half of Chitra, all of Swati (linked with wind and independence) and most of Vishakha. The ruler, Venus, is the same in both systems; Bṛhat Jātaka lists Venus as lord of the seventh sign.[30]
How accurate is vedic astrology?
Under controlled testing, neither Vedic nor Western astrology has shown that it predicts personality or events reliably. Many people still find a chart useful as a structured way to reflect, and the sidereal system is astronomically careful about where the Sun and Moon are against the stars. Treat any reading as a prompt you test against your own life.
Common misconceptions about Libra
- "Libras are shallow because Venus likes beauty." Venus is linked to beauty and to values. A sense of proportion can apply to an argument as much as to a room.
- "Libra needs a partner to be happy." The seventh sign is linked with partnership in the abstract: contracts, collaborators, friends, rivals. It does not say anything about whether you should be in a relationship.
- "My Western and Vedic charts disagree, so one is wrong." They use different reference points. Pick the lens you are asking about and read that one.

The sign lord follows Bṛhat Jātaka 1.6.[30] Dignity notes and date ranges are standard traditional and astronomical approximations, not separately cited. Reflection prompts are original editorial writing.
Common questions
Is Libra the only sign that isn't an animal or person?
Yes. The scales are the one inanimate symbol in the zodiac. Tula, the Sanskrit name, also means a balance or scale.
Who rules Libra in Vedic astrology?
Venus (Shukra), the same as in Western astrology. Venus also rules Taurus.
Are Libras indecisive?
Libra is described as weighing both sides, which can be slow. Many Libra Suns decide well once they have heard everyone out, and the rest of the chart shapes this a lot.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
