Zodiac sign

Fire, earth, air and water signs: the zodiac elements

The twelve zodiac signs fall into four elements, three signs each. Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Western and Vedic astrology use the same assignments.

Which signs belong to each element?

Dates are the Sun's computed sign ingresses for 2027 in UTC; they move by about a day from year to year. Sidereal dates use the Lahiri ayanamsa.

What are astrology signs?

Astrology signs are twelve equal 30-degree sections of the zodiac, the band of sky the Sun, Moon and planets appear to travel through. Each sign gets an element and a modality, and those two labels do much of the work in describing it. Elements say what kind of energy a sign has. Modalities say how it moves.

Element Signs Tropical Sun dates Sidereal Sun dates (approx.) Short version
Fire Aries, Leo, Sagittarius Mar 21-Apr 19, Jul 23-Aug 22, Nov 22-Dec 21 Apr 14-May 14, Aug 17-Sep 16, Dec 16-Jan 13 Action, warmth, appetite
Earth Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn Apr 20-May 20, Aug 23-Sep 22, Dec 22-Jan 19 May 15-Jun 14, Sep 17-Oct 16, Jan 14-Feb 12 Practical, steady, physical
Air Gemini, Libra, Aquarius May 21-Jun 20, Sep 23-Oct 22, Jan 20-Feb 18 Jun 15-Jul 15, Oct 17-Nov 15, Feb 13-Mar 13 Ideas, talk, connection
Water Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces Jun 21-Jul 22, Oct 23-Nov 21, Feb 19-Mar 20 Jul 16-Aug 16, Nov 16-Dec 15, Mar 14-Apr 13 Feeling, memory, intuition

The pattern repeats in order around the zodiac: fire, earth, air, water, then fire again. That means signs of the same element always sit four signs apart, forming a triangle (astrologers call this a triplicity, and the 120-degree angle a trine).

Fire signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Fire is the element of doing. Fire signs are described as direct, enthusiastic and quick to start, with the downside of burning out or running over people. Aries starts fires, Leo keeps one going, and Sagittarius carries it somewhere new. If your chart is full of fire, the useful question is usually about pacing, not motivation.

Earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Earth is the element of the tangible: bodies, money, food, time, craft. Earth signs are described as patient and reliable, sometimes to the point of resisting change. Taurus enjoys the material world, Virgo refines it, and Capricorn builds structures in it. A chart heavy in earth tends to trust what it can measure.

Air signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Air is the element of thought and exchange. Air signs are described as curious, social and good at seeing patterns, with a tendency to live in their heads. Gemini gathers information, Libra weighs it between people, and Aquarius applies it to groups and systems. Lots of air in a chart often shows up as a need to talk things through.

Water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Water is the element of feeling. Water signs are described as empathic, protective and perceptive, sometimes absorbing more of other people's moods than they should. Cancer protects, Scorpio goes deep, and Pisces dissolves boundaries. Water-heavy charts usually need time to process before they can explain what they feel.

How do elements combine?

Traditional pairings put fire with air (air feeds fire) and earth with water (water shapes earth). Same-element pairs share a rhythm. Combinations like fire and water or air and earth are described as harder because they run on different fuels. In practice, "harder" means you have to translate more, not that it can't work. The compatibility pages look at each pair in detail.

How to count the elements in your own chart

Your Sun sign is one data point. To see your actual balance, list the signs of your Sun, Moon, rising sign, Mercury, Venus and Mars, and count each element. Some astrologers weight the Sun, Moon and ascendant double.

  1. Get your chart from the birth chart calculator.
  2. Write down the six placements and their signs.
  3. Tally fire, earth, air and water.
  4. Notice the element with the highest count and the one with zero.

The missing element is often the more interesting one. A chart with no earth, for example, is commonly read as someone who has to work deliberately at routines that others find automatic.

Elements in Vedic astrology

Jyotish assigns the same element to each sign. The Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, for example, describes Aries as fiery, Taurus as earthy and Gemini as airy, continuing the same cycle.[31] Sanskrit names are agni (fire), prithvi or bhumi (earth), vayu (air) and jala (water).

Two things change in practice. First, the sidereal zodiac shifts the dates by about 24 days, so your Sun can land in a different element; a tropical Aries (fire) born in early April is a sidereal Pisces (water). Second, Vedic readings lean on the Moon sign and ascendant more than the Sun, so the element of your Moon may carry more weight there.

Common misconceptions

  1. "Water signs are weak and fire signs are strong." Elements describe temperament, not strength.
  2. "Two fire signs will fight constantly." Same-element pairs usually understand each other's pace. Conflict depends on the people.
  3. "Aquarius is a water sign." It's air. The water bearer's name trips everyone up.
  4. "My element decides my personality." It is one layer among many, and astrology offers it as a way to reflect, not a test result.

Common questions

What element am I?

Start with your Sun sign's element, then look at your Moon and rising sign. Many people have a mix, and the element that shows up most often across the chart usually says more than the Sun alone.

Do Vedic and Western astrology use the same elements?

Yes. Both assign fire, earth, air and water to the same signs. Because the two zodiacs have different dates, your Sun's element can differ between them.

Which elements get along?

Signs of the same element share a temperament. Fire and air are traditionally paired, as are earth and water. Any combination can work; the pairing describes a style, not a result.

Is there a fifth element?

Some Indian frameworks name a fifth, ether (akasha), but zodiac signs are assigned only the four classical elements.

How we calculate

Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?

No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.

How are these results calculated?

Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
