Zodiac sign

Taurus zodiac sign: dates, traits and the Vedic view

Taurus is the second zodiac sign. Tropical Taurus runs from about April 20 to May 20; in the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology, the Sun is in Taurus (Vrishabha) from about May 15 to June 14. It is a fixed earth sign ruled by Venus in both systems, and its symbol is the bull.

What zodiac sign in May?

May is split between two signs. Taurus covers roughly the first three weeks, up to about May 20, and Gemini starts around May 21. That is the tropical answer. Using the sidereal zodiac, most of May belongs to Aries (Mesha), and the Sun crosses into sidereal Taurus near May 15.

Taurus in the Western lens

Taurus is earth, and it is fixed, so Western astrology describes it as the sign that stays. Comfort, pace, the body, things you can touch and keep. Venus as ruler adds taste: food, music, texture, a well-made object that lasts twenty years.

The stereotype is a person on a couch refusing to move. I think a fairer version is someone who wants to know that a change is worth the disruption before agreeing to it. That can be maddening in a group project and very useful in a crisis, when the Taurus in the room is the one still eating lunch and thinking clearly.

If Taurus is strong in your chart, these questions tend to be more useful than a list of adjectives:

What changes in Vedic astrology?

The dates move first. Sidereal signs are counted from the fixed stars, and the gap between the two zodiacs is now about 24 degrees, so roughly the first three weeks of tropical Taurus fall in sidereal Aries.

The weighting changes too. In Jyotish, the Sun sign is one placement among several, and most readings start with the Moon sign and the rising sign. Taurus carries special weight for the Moon: in the classical scheme the Moon is exalted in Vrishabha, which is why a Taurus Moon gets more attention in Vedic readings than a Taurus Sun.

Sidereal Taurus also contains Rohini, the nakshatra traditionally linked to growth and fertility, so a Vedic reading of a Taurus placement often turns to Rohini or its neighbors, Krittika and Mrigashira.

The ruler is the same in both systems. Bṛhat Jātaka lists Venus as lord of the second sign, and the BPHS transcription describes Taurus as earthy and lorded by Venus.[30][31]

Is Vedic astrology more accurate?

Nobody has shown that either system predicts personality or events better than the other, and controlled studies of astrology in general have not found predictive accuracy. The two systems answer different questions. Tropical astrology ties signs to the seasons; sidereal astrology ties them to the visible stars and adds tools like nakshatras and dashas for timing. On this site we show both and let you compare them against your own life.

Common misconceptions about Taurus

  1. "Taurus is lazy." Fixed earth is described as persistent. Persistence and laziness can look alike from the outside, but they are different things.
  2. "Taurus only cares about money." Venus rules Taurus, and the sign is linked with resources and values. Values include time, friendships and how you want to spend a Saturday, not only a bank balance.
  3. "If I'm Taurus in one system, I'm Taurus in both." Often you are not. Roughly four out of five tropical Taurus birthdays fall in sidereal Aries.

The sign lord follows Bṛhat Jātaka 1.6 and BPHS chapter 4; the BPHS web transcription has OCR errors and serves as a corroborating witness.[30][31] Date ranges are standard approximations. The personality prompts and the note on research are editorial writing, not sourced claims.

Common questions

Is Taurus ruled by Venus in Vedic astrology?

Yes. Venus (Shukra) is the lord of Vrishabha in Jyotish, the same ruler Western astrology gives Taurus.

I was born on May 10. Am I a Taurus?

In the tropical zodiac, yes. In the sidereal zodiac your Sun is probably still in Aries, because sidereal Taurus begins around May 15. A birth chart will show both.

Are Taurus people stubborn?

Some are, some aren't. Fixed signs are described as steady and slow to change course, which can look like stubbornness or like reliability depending on the situation and on the rest of the chart.

How we calculate

Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?

No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.

How are these results calculated?

Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
