Zodiac sign

Cancer zodiac sign: dates, traits and the Vedic view

Cancer is the fourth zodiac sign. Tropical Cancer runs from about June 21 to July 22, starting at the June solstice. In sidereal (Vedic) astrology the Sun is in Cancer, called Karka, from about July 16 to August 16. It is a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon in both systems; its symbol is the crab.

What is the astrology sign for July?

For most of July the tropical answer is Cancer, which runs until about July 22. Leo takes over from around July 23. The sidereal answer is different: the first two weeks of July are sidereal Gemini (Mithuna), and the Sun enters sidereal Cancer near July 16.

Fact Tropical (Western) Sidereal (Vedic)

Tropical Cancer begins at the June solstice, so its start date is tied to an astronomical event and moves by about a day between years. For birthdays near June 21 or July 22, use a birth chart calculator with the birth time.

Cancer in the Western lens

Water plus cardinal is an unusual mix. Water is described as receptive and feeling-led; cardinal signs start things. Western astrology resolves this by making Cancer the sign that starts by protecting: building a home, gathering people, setting up the conditions in which others can feel safe. The crab is a good image for it. Hard shell, soft inside, moves sideways around a direct confrontation.

That last part is where the friction tends to live. A Cancer-heavy chart is often described as remembering everything and saying little until it boils over. Whether that fits you is something only you can check. I'd treat the sign as a set of questions about care and self-protection rather than a forecast of moodiness.

What changes in Vedic astrology?

Dates first. Sidereal signs are measured from the fixed stars and currently sit about 24 degrees behind the tropical ones, so most tropical Cancer birthdays have the Sun in sidereal Gemini.

Then emphasis. Vedic astrology gives the Moon enormous weight, and Karka is the Moon's own sign, so a Cancer Moon or Cancer ascendant tends to matter more in a Jyotish reading than a Cancer Sun. The classical dignity scheme also places Jupiter's exaltation in Karka and Mars's debilitation there, two details a Vedic astrologer will look at before saying anything about the sign.

Sidereal Karka contains the last pada of Punarvasu, all of Pushya and all of Ashlesha. Pushya is one of the nakshatras most often recommended for starting things in muhurta practice, which gives the sign a different texture in Vedic timing.

The ruler stays the same. Bṛhat Jātaka lists the Moon as lord of the fourth sign.[30]

What is lagna in vedic astrology?

Lagna is the ascendant: the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. In Jyotish it sets up the houses of the chart and is read alongside the Moon sign. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why an accurate birth time matters. A Cancer lagna and a Cancer Sun are separate placements and get read differently.

Common misconceptions about Cancer

  1. "Cancer is the weakest sign." No sign is weak. Cardinal signs are classed as initiating, and Cancer starts things constantly: families, teams, traditions.
  2. "Cancers can't handle conflict." Some avoid it. Others are formidable once something they care about is threatened, which the crab's claws were always meant to suggest.
  3. "Your Vedic sign is your Western sign minus one." Often, but not always. About a week at the end of each sign stays the same in both zodiacs, so check the actual calculation.

Common questions

Is Cancer the only sign ruled by the Moon?

Yes. In both Western and Vedic astrology the Moon rules one sign, Cancer (Karka). The Sun likewise rules only Leo.

Why does a Vedic chart call me a Gemini when I was born on July 2?

Sidereal Cancer does not begin until about July 16, so a July 2 Sun is in sidereal Gemini. Your tropical Sun is still in Cancer.

Are Cancers always emotional?

Water signs are described in terms of feeling and attachment, but how anyone handles emotion depends on the whole chart and on their life. A Cancer Sun can be very private and very calm.

How we calculate

Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?

No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.

How are these results calculated?

Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
