Scorpio zodiac sign: dates, traits and the Vedic view
Scorpio is the eighth zodiac sign. Tropical Scorpio runs from about October 23 to November 21; in the sidereal zodiac used by Vedic astrologers the Sun is in Scorpio, called Vrischika, from about November 16 to December 15. It is a fixed water sign. Mars is its traditional and Vedic ruler, and modern Western astrology adds Pluto.

What is November's zodiac sign?
In tropical astrology, November starts in Scorpio and switches to Sagittarius around November 22. In the sidereal zodiac, November starts in Libra (Tula) and switches to Scorpio (Vrischika) around November 16. So for about three weeks in early November, the Western answer is Scorpio and the Vedic answer is Libra.

Scorpio in the Western lens
Water is feeling; fixed is persistence. Together they make Scorpio the sign Western astrology associates with depth, loyalty and things that stay under the surface. Mars gives it a fighter's edge and Pluto, in the modern reading, adds themes of power, endings and transformation.
That is a lot of drama for one sign, and it has produced some of astrology's worst stereotypes: jealous, secretive, vengeful. I'd rather describe Scorpio as the sign that wants the real version of things. Real trust, real conversations, the actual reason someone left. That desire can be uncomfortable for other people, and it can make the Scorpio-heavy person slow to trust. It is also why people bring their hardest problems to them.
Reflection prompts:
- Who has earned your trust, and what exactly did they do to earn it?
- What are you holding onto that has already ended?
- Where is privacy protecting you, and where is it isolating you?
What changes in Vedic astrology?
The dates shift by about 24 days because the sidereal zodiac is anchored to the stars. Most tropical Scorpios are sidereal Libras.
The rulership simplifies. Jyotish uses only the visible planets plus the lunar nodes, so Pluto has no role and Mars alone rules Vrischika. Bṛhat Jātaka lists Mars as lord of the eighth sign, the same planet that rules Aries.[30]
The dignity picture adds a wrinkle. In the classical scheme the Moon is debilitated in Vrischika. A Vedic astrologer reading a Scorpio Moon will note that and then check for factors that modify it. A debilitated Moon is a technical label for a placement. It does not mean a person is emotionally broken.
Finally the nakshatras: sidereal Vrischika holds the last pada of Vishakha, all of Anuradha (associated with Mitra and friendship) and all of Jyeshtha (associated with Indra). Anuradha's friendship theme is a useful counterweight to the Western image of Scorpio as suspicious.
What is nakshatra in vedic astrology?
A nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions, equal 13°20' segments of the sidereal zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the nakshatra of the Moon at birth as a key part of a reading and as the starting point for dasha timing. Each sign holds two and a quarter nakshatras, so Scorpio spans parts of three. See the nakshatra guide for all 27.
Common misconceptions about Scorpio
- "Scorpio is the sex sign." The eighth sign is linked with intimacy, shared resources and transformation. That is broader than sex and includes things like inheritance, debt and trust.
- "Scorpios hold grudges forever." Fixed signs are described as consistent. Consistency can mean loyalty as much as resentment.
- "Pluto's demotion changed Scorpio." Pluto's reclassification as a dwarf planet in 2006 changed astronomy's categories. Astrologers who use Pluto still use it.

The sign lord follows Bṛhat Jātaka 1.6.[30] The Pluto discovery and 2006 reclassification dates, dignity notes and sign dates are standard facts and approximations, not separately cited. Reflection prompts are original editorial writing.
Common questions
Is Scorpio ruled by Mars or Pluto?
Both answers are in use. Traditional Western astrology and Vedic astrology give Mars. Modern Western astrology added Pluto after its discovery in 1930 and often lists Mars as a co-ruler.
What is Scorpio called in Vedic astrology?
Vrishchika or Vrischika, from the Sanskrit for scorpion. Its lord is Mars (Mangala).
Are Scorpios vengeful?
That reputation is a stereotype. Scorpio is described as intense and private, and how intensity shows up depends on the person and the rest of the chart.

How we calculate
Is astrology a guarantee of what will happen?
No. These calculations locate celestial bodies; astrology is a reflection and timing tradition, not evidence of guaranteed health, financial or relationship outcomes.
How are these results calculated?
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and are checked against Swiss Ephemeris in our methodology tests. Western readings use the tropical zodiac; Vedic readings subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Terms are defined in the glossary.
